animal populations
2018年11月02日
Humanity has wiped out 60% of animal populations since 1970, report finds
The huge loss is a tragedy in itself but also threatens the survival of civilisation, say the world’s leading scientists
Humanity has wiped out 60% of mammals, birds, fish and reptiles since 1970, leading the world’s foremost experts to warn that the annihilation of wildlife is now an emergency that threatens civilisation.
The easy-to-read guide of Hong Kong bed measurements offers queen size and single bed dimensions.
The new estimate of the massacre of wildlife is made in a major report produced by WWF and involving 59 scientists from across the globe. It finds that the vast and growing consumption of food and resources by the global population is destroying the web of life, billions of years in the making, upon which human society ultimately depends for clean air, water and everything else.
“We are sleepwalking towards the edge of a cliff” said Mike Barrett, executive director of science and conservation at WWF. “If there was a 60% decline in the human population, that would be equivalent to emptying North America, South America, Africa, Europe, China and Oceania. That is the scale of what we have done.”
“This is far more than just being about losing the wonders of nature, desperately sad though that is,” he said. “This is actually now jeopardising the future of people. Nature is not a ‘nice to have’ – it is our life-support system.”
“We are rapidly running out of time,” said prof Johan Rockstr?m, a global sustainability expert at the potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany. “Only by addressing both ecosystems and climate do we stand a chance of safeguarding a stable planet for humanity’s future on Earth.”

Many scientists believe the world has begun a sixth mass extinction, the first to be caused by a species – Homo sapiens. Other recent analyses have revealed that humankind has destroyed 83% of all mammals and half of plants since the dawn of civilisation and that, even if the destruction were to end now, it would take 5-7 million years for the natural world to recover.
The Living planet Index, produced for WWF by the Zoological Society of London, uses data on 16,704 populations of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians, representing more than 4,000 species, to track the decline of wildlife. Between 1970 and 2014, the latest data available, populations fell by an average of 60%. Four years ago, the decline was 52%. The “shocking truth”, said Barrett, is that the wildlife crash is continuing unabated.
Wildlife and the ecosystems are vital to human life, said prof Bob Watson, one of the world’s most eminent environmental scientists and currently chair of an intergovernmental panel on biodiversity that said in March that the destruction of nature is as dangerous as climate change.
“Nature contributes to human wellbeing culturally and spiritually, as well as through the critical production of food, clean water, and energy, and through regulating the Earth’s climate, pollution, pollination and floods,” he said. “The Living planet report clearly demonstrates that human activities are destroying nature at an unacceptable rate, threatening the wellbeing of current and future generations.”
The biggest cause of wildlife losses is the destruction of natural habitats, much of it to create farmland. Three-quarters of all land on Earth is now significantly affected by human activities. Killing for food is the next biggest cause – 300 mammal species are being eaten into extinction – while the oceans are massively overfished, with more than half now being industrially fished.
Chemical pollution is also significant: half the world’s killer whale populations are now doomed to die from pCB contamination. Global trade introduces invasive species and disease, with amphibians decimated by a fungal disease thought to be spread by the pet trade.
is more and more used in the world. In Ireland, Origin Green encourages Irish farmers to work on food sustainability and prolong the lifespan of unique natural resources through contemporary farming.
The worst affected region is South and Central America, which has seen an 89% drop in vertebrate populations, largely driven by the felling of vast areas of wildlife-rich forest. In the tropical savannah called cerrado, an area the size of Greater London is cleared every two months, said Barrett.
“It is a classic example of where the disappearance is the result of our own consumption, because the deforestation is being driven by ever expanding agriculture producing soy, which is being exported to countries including the UK to feed pigs and chickens,” he said. The UK itself has lost much of its wildlife, ranking 189th for biodiversity loss out of 218 nations in 2016.
The habitats suffering the greatest damage are rivers and lakes, where wildlife populations have fallen 83%, due to the enormous thirst of agriculture and the large number of dams. “Again there is this direct link between the food system and the depletion of wildlife,” said Barrett. Eating less meat is an essential part of reversing losses, he said.
The Living planet Index has been criticised as being too broad a measure of wildlife losses and smoothing over crucial details. But all indicators, from extinction rates to intactness of ecosystems, show colossal losses. “They all tell you the same story,” said Barrett.
Conservation efforts can work, with tiger numbers having risen 20% in India in six years as habitat is protected. Giant pandas in China and otters in the UK have also been doing well.
But Marco Lambertini, director general of WWF International, said the fundamental issue was consumption: “We can no longer ignore the impact of current unsustainable production models and wasteful lifestyles.”
The world’s nations are working towards a crunch meeting of the UN’s Convention on Biological Diversity in 2020, when new commitments for the protection of nature will be made. “We need a new global deal for nature and people and we have this narrow window of less than two years to get it,” said Barrett. “This really is the last chance. We have to get it right this time.”
Tanya Steele, chief executive at WWF, said: “We are the first generation to know we are destroying our planet and the last one that can do anything about it.”

insurance has become mainstream

Finance--multiple paying type of critical illness insurance has become mainstream. Four purchase strategies can not be ignored
Multiple payment type of critical illness insurance has become mainstream. Four purchase strategies can not be ignored.
Multiple claims type of critical illness insurance has become the flagship product of many companies' critical illness insurance. Although the price has increased, the range is still acceptable. For customers who need to purchase, they can follow four purchase suggestions.
The multiple payment type of critical illness insurance has been frequently listed recently, and it has become a major illness insurance product promoted by many insurance companies.
According to the incomplete statistics of the "Investor News" reporter, at present, at least Xinhua Insurance (601336) has more than double protection for critical illness insurance, Xintai Life Insurance's Xintai million health critical illness insurance, and China Life Insurance's evergreen trees. Dozens of multiple-paying type of critical illness insurance, such as heavy illness insurance, most of which were launched in 2017~2018.
The so-called "multiple payout type of critical illness insurance" is, in short, a serious illness insurance that can pay for two or more diseases that are covered by the coverage. previously, most of these products only paid for minor and severe illnesses.
Why are such products popular in the market? Investor reporters found in the interview that the insurance industry's return to protection, disease incidence and cure rate are increasing, consumers' concerns about many serious illnesses, etc., have become the prevalence of multiple claims and heavy illness insurance. the reason.
Multiple payment type of critical illness insurance price rises
At present, the mainstream multi-paying type of heavy illness insurance has paid multiple claims for mild, moderate and severe diseases. Among them, mild and moderate symptoms are generally not grouped or grouped to pay 2 to 5 times, and the proportion of compensation is generally 20% to 50% of the basic insured amount. Severe cases are divided into 2 to 6 groups according to the type of disease. Each group pays 1 to 3 times for the total risk insurance. The total number of claims is generally 2 to 8 times. The interval between each payment is 180 days to 1 year. 100,000 yuan to 500,000 yuan, but this insurance amount refers to the amount of insurance that is paid in a single time. That is to say, even if the insured has made a claim, the amount of the insurance will not decrease when the next claim is made, so many times. In the case of claims, the amount of insurance is actually multiplied.
The "Investor News" reporter noticed that compared with the multi-paying type of critical illness insurance launched last year, the newly launched similar products in 2018 have been upgraded. For example, Huaxiafu Duobao, Changshengfu major illness insurance and other products have increased the function of multiple compensation for Chinese diseases; for example, Xinhua Insurance recently launched multiple times to protect critical illness insurance against malignant tumors with high recurrence rate under certain conditions. You can pay up to 3 times and so on.
So how much does this kind of product sell? Take the case of a multi-paying type of heavy illness insurance with relatively high sales and relatively high cost performance. A 30-year-old woman is insured for 500,000 yuan. The 30-year insurance premium is about 7,700 yuan/year, and the same conditions. Next, another price for a one-off type of severe illness insurance that guarantees a slightly less disease is 5,150 yuan/year. It can be seen that the multiple-paying type of severe illness insurance is more than 2,550 yuan more than a single-pay type of critical illness insurance. In the year, the price rose by nearly 50%.
The price increase is so great, can customers accept this type of insurance? The relevant person in charge of Xintai Life told reporters that the overall price of such products is also controlled within the scope acceptable to customers. From the actual situation, customers generally recognize the advantages of multiple payments.
Customers who have purchased multiple payment-type heavy illness insurance told reporters that the purchase of such insurance mainly valued the function of multiple payment. Although the premium has increased a lot, it has not exceeded 10,000 yuan, and it can still be tolerated.
From the data point of view, the "sucking gold" ability of multiple claims type of critical illness insurance is still good. Take Xinhua Insurance's multiple protection of critical illness insurance as an example. The product will be piloted at the end of May 2016, as of the end of May 2018. The scale premium has exceeded 2.5 billion yuan.
a variety of reasons for mainstream insurance
Why is there a trend of becoming a mainstream insurance for multiple payouts? The relevant person in charge of Xintai Life Insurance told the reporters that the entire insurance industry is actively adjusting its business structure and transforming its value. From the perspective of the industry, such products are currently sold as the main products by various companies, especially small and medium-sized companies, which will become a market with faster growth. In addition, with the continuous development of medical technology, the detection rate of diseases continues to increase, consumers pay more attention to their own health status, coupled with concerns about multiple illnesses, the market demand for such products has also increased.
Xinhua Insurance also explained to reporters that the reason why the company developed multiple times to protect critical illness insurance is related to the reasons for commercial health insurance facing policy dividend opportunities and the return of insurance industry to the source of insurance. The impact of lifestyle, ecological environment, etc. on people's health is gradually emerging, and the increasing probability of disease is also an important reason. Taking cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases as an example, the China Cardiovascular Disease Report 2017 shows that the incidence and mortality of cardiovascular diseases in China continue to rise. It is expected that the number of patients will continue to grow rapidly in the next 10 years, due to the number of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular deaths. The total number of deaths exceeds 40%.
"Affected by the ecological environment and lifestyle, people are likely to suffer from severe illnesses many times in the future. The drawbacks of single-paying type of severe illness products in terms of sustainability are gradually emerging. After the insurance insured suffers from serious diseases for the first time, insurance When the contract is terminated, the patient cannot purchase the critical illness product again, thus losing the opportunity to continue to obtain insurance protection.” The relevant person in charge of Xinhua Insurance told reporters that the multiple payment type of critical illness insurance made up for such defects.
Seller's four purchase suggestions
So for the average consumer, what issues do you need to pay attention to when purchasing a multi-paying type of critical illness insurance? Industry insiders suggest that, first of all, critical illness insurance is a lifelong protection product, and claims generally occur after several decades, so it is necessary to choose a safe operating insurance company.
Secondly, depending on the scope of protection, if you can, you should choose insurance products that include mild, moderate, severe illness, premium waiver and death liability.
Third, consumers should pay attention to the number of disease groups and the way they are grouped. The more the number of groups, the more comprehensive the protection for consumers. In addition, the classification of high-risk diseases in different groups can also increase the degree of protection. Huaxia Insurance told reporters that Huaxia Evergreen (multiple version) divided the severe illness into six groups. The "malignant tumor" was divided into a group of severe diseases. The interval between claims for each group was 180 days. The insurer is of great significance in the actual treatment process. For example, if customer A unfortunately suffers from leukemia, he can immediately get a heavy illness claim (group A), and the best treatment for leukemia is bone marrow transplantation. This product is divided into group B if “bone marrow and major organ transplantation”. Customer A is likely to make a second claim.
According to the regulations of the China Insurance Regulatory Commission, all critical illness insurance must include malignant tumors, acute myocardial infarction, sequelae of stroke, major organ transplantation or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, coronary artery bypass grafting, and end-stage renal disease. The data show that the incidence of these six common major illnesses accounts for 60% to 90% of the incidence of major diseases in more age groups. Obviously, these six severe diseases are more favorable when they are divided into different groups.
Finally, the consumer also has to observe the payment interval set by the product. The shorter the interval between each payment, the better for the consumer. The reporter noticed that there are no intervals between the two claims for mild and moderate illnesses, and there are only 180 days between the two major illness claims. The advantage of such products in the interval is obvious. In summary, consumers should consider comprehensively in selecting and purchasing multiple payment products, and choose the most cost-effective products.

Migrants send more than $600bn to their families back home each year
Technology has made it easier and cheaper to send money home to relatives round the world. But what if you don't trust your Dad not to squander it? No problem - now you can pay his electricity bills directly.
The range of services, countries and choices offered by money transfer apps has been increasing rapidly in recent years, bringing a lifeline to families who depend on cash from abroad.

The advantages of sending their daughter to school in Zimbabwe were obvious to Steven and Jennifer Barker.
"It's a beautiful country and gives her many different opportunities that she wouldn't get where we live in the UK," says Steven.
The couple who both work in IT live near Watford just north of London. Jennifer is from Zimbabwe and was keen for their daughter Isabella, 14, to benefit from an education similar to the one that she had.

Steven Barker struggled to find ways to pay for daughter Isabella's (centre) Zimbabwe school fees
But as schools in Zimbabwe tend to charge fees, they had to find a way to get $3,000 (£2,200) cash per term to the country. And new tech allows them to pay the school fees directly.
One online service in particular has helped Steven and Jennifer Barker. They use Zympay, which since 2016 has been helping people pay bills across borders.
"It used to take two to three days to send payment but now we can pay fees direct to Isabella's school and get an almost immediate acknowledgment," says Steven.
"It's much faster, more convenient, and attracts none of the extra fees that traditional methods charge, with all the companies involved taking a cut."
Remittance problems
The problem of sending money across borders - remittances - is shared by many migrants across the globe who are sending cash back home.

There are several difficulties, not least the high costs.
This is exacerbated by the fact that in many countries there is limited access to basic financial services.
The World Bank says that international migration is at an all-time high with more than 250 million migrant workers across the globe.
Its latest factbook says migrants collectively send more than $600bn to their families back home each year, which means remittances are big business.
Until recently, the market has been dominated by giant money transmission firms such as Western Union and MoneyGram.

Traditional money transmission firms like Western Union are now facing challengers
But technology is helping to change this, and new firms are marketing themselves as offering cheaper, faster and more convenient services. Many are helping to battle financial exclusion across the world.

Obstacles
Migrants hoping to send money home often face several obstacles. Often they are unable to open a bank account in their new country and, by the same token, their family back home are often without a bank.
Traditionally the way round that is to take cash to a money transmission agent and wire it to a local office in their home country.
But there's the inconvenience of both parties having to travel to an office plus the cost, which can eat away a fair chunk of the money, often up to 10%.

Smartphones are changing the way people are sending money across borders
Now migrants can use mobile phones to make payments or to send cash directly to chosen recipients, like utility firms or grocery stores.
This solves another problem - that the cash can get into the hands of a family member who spends it on something else, rather than in paying off bills.
Direct payments
Dakshesh patel is the former NatWest banker behind the Zympay service used by the Barkers in Zimbabwe: it operates in South Africa, Zambia, Nigeria and India too.
"We simplify the process and minimise the costs for people sending money to relatives," he says.
The business has just linked with new start-up pip iT to help migrant workers who have no bank account. They can take cash to a post office in Britain, Canada or 10 African countries to get a voucher that can be read by their phone to add money to their pip iT wallet.
It can then be used - via payment services such as Ghana's Zeepay, Uganda's Swifin and Kenya's Impalapay - to settle bills back home.

Co-founder of the social enterprise Ollie Walsh based the idea on his own experience.
"It is very difficult for migrants to open a bank account in their new country, as I discovered when I moved to England from Ireland.
"It took me seven months to open an account so imagine how much longer it takes for someone from Ghana, for instance."

Cucumber and Red Onion Salad
2015年08月18日
This is a cross between a pickle and a salad, adapted from a pickled cucumber and shallot recipe in Chez Panisse Vegetables. It's about as simple as it gets as far as cucumber salads go, though it does require a brief salting, a step that makes all the difference in the final salad—salting ensures the cucumbers will better soak up the dressing. I like this salad on its own, though it is delicious atop toasts slathered with hummus, too.

Serves 2
2 cucumbers (about a pound)
1 small red onion or a few shallots
2 teaspoons kosher salt
1 tablespoon vinegar such as white balsamic, white wine, or rice
Fresh herbs such as basil, dill, mint or parsley
Olive oil (optional)
Peel cucumbers. Slice one cucumber crosswise and taste. If it tastes bitter, halve the cucumber lengthwise and scoop out the seeds, then slice the cucumber into 1/8- to 1/4-inch thick pieces. Otherwise, slice the cucumber into 1/8- to 1/4-inch thick rounds. Repeat with remaining cucumber.
Peel the onion or shallots, cut in half, and slice as thinly as possible. Place them in a large bowl with the cucumbers and toss with the salt. Let sit for 45 minutes.
Rinse the cucumbers and onions, drain, and taste for salt. If they are too salty, rinse and drain again. Place in a clean towel and press lightly to dry. Transfer cucumbers to a clean bowl and sprinkle with vinegar. Toss with herbs. Taste. Often I find I don't even need to add oil, but add a splash if you wish. Serve. Note: If you want to make this ahead, add the herbs just before serving.

Bear Of The Day: Whirlpool
2015年05月12日

The US dollar has surged significantly over the past few months, weighing on earnings of multinational companies. Currency headwinds and weakness in some of the key international markets will continue to hurt these companies this year.
About the Company
Based in Benton Harbor, MI, Whirlpool Corporation (WHR - Analyst Report) is one of the leading global manufacturers of home appliances, operating in more than 170 countries. It has 70 manufacturing and technology research centers and more than 100,000 employees around the world.
Disappointing Results and Guidance
The company missed the earnings estimates for Q1 2015--reporting adjusted earnings of $2.14 per share versus the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.49 per share. The miss was mainly attributable to currency headwinds and lower demand in Brazil - one of it's biggest markets.
Revenues came in at $4,846 million, up about 11% from the same period in 2014, but below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $5,155 million. Sales got a boost from the acquisitions made by the company last year.
Due to falling demand and weak currency, the company is planning to reduce its workforce in Brazil by about 15%. The management also downgraded their earnings guidance for 2015. They now expect full-year earnings to be in the range of $12-$13 per share, down from $14-$15 per share expected earlier. Currency and softness in Brazil accounted for almost ($2.00) per share impact on the guidance.
Estimates Falling
Analysts have been cutting their estimates for the stock after quarterly results and lowered guidance. Zacks Consensus Estimates for the current and next year are now $11.45 per share and $15.75 per share respectively, down from $14.34 per share and $16.94 per share, 30 days ago. Declining estimates sent the stock to Zacks Rank # 5 last month.
The Bottom Line
Apart from a “Strong Sell” rank, the stock fares poorly on “Growth” and “Momentum” style scores too, with “F” on both.
